Lunch & Learn Grant

Lunch and Learn Receives Community Foundation Grant Support

October 2025 Lunch and Learn with Program from Alzheimer’s Association

Friends of the Valdese Rec is proud to announce that we have received a $2,400 grant from the Community Foundation of Burke County (CFBC) to support our Lunch and Learn program — a free monthly gathering that brings together older adults in our community for food, fellowship, and educational programs. This funding will allow us to continue offering high-quality meals to 25–35 participants each month while reducing the burden on attendees to bring food unless they choose to.

The Lunch and Learn program began in August 2022 in response to a clear local need for social connection among seniors, especially following the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. By combining a shared meal with a short, informative presentation, we’ve created a space where seniors — including widows, caregivers, and those without nearby family — can connect, learn, and feel a renewed sense of purpose and belonging. Thanks to CFBC’s support, we can now offer more consistent, nourishing meals and even incorporate “splurge” days from local restaurants, making each event feel like a special occasion.

We are incredibly grateful to the Community Foundation of Burke County for recognizing the value of this program and investing in the well-being of our senior population. Their generosity helps us continue our mission of building community through recreation, connection, and care — one lunch at a time.
